Vice President for Advancement and External Relations

The University of Houston-Downtown is seeking an excellent candidate for the position of Vice President for Advancement and External Relations. UHD enrolls over 12,000 undergraduate and graduate students and offers daytime, evening, and weekend courses through both classroom and various technology-enabled mediums. UHD has received top rankings by U.S. News & World Report for wireless Internet accessibility and for the diversity of its student body. Houston is the nation’s fourth most populous city and second lowest in terms of cost of living among major American cities. The city is home to 23 Fortune 500 companies and many other world-class institutions in the areas of energy, medicine, aerospace, manufacturing, and business services. The university’s proximity to downtown enables excellent access to these and the many other resources available in Houston and the surrounding region.
The Vice President for Advancement and External Relations is the university’s senior development officer and provides strategic and operational leadership for the functional areas of the department, which include corporate and foundation relations, planned giving, major gift procurement, comprehensive and capital campaigns, alumni relations, communications and public relations, development, government and community affairs, and special events. The Vice President for Advancement and External Relations is the major gift fundraiser for the University and serves as lead strategist and solicitor in acquiring high level donations for the University, oversees all fundraising staff; coordinates with the president, deans, and President’s Development Council; oversees work with alumni, donors, corporations and foundations; oversees University communications and messaging; and functions as chief spokesperson for all matters related to the University’s fundraising efforts.
A Master’s Degree (preferred) with seven (7) years of senior level fundraising experience in university advancement and/or development with a successful record of accomplishment in leading multi-million dollar capital campaigns, direct solicitation, prospect management, annual giving, major and planned giving management, alumni affairs, and, and public relations preferred. A Bachelor’s Degree may be accepted in lieu of Master’s with at least ten (10) years of significant job related experience with increasing duties and demonstrated success in fundraising and leadership to fundraising efforts. Experience in higher education and knowledge of Houston preferred.
Appropriate CASE membership and certification preferred.
