PRESIDENTIAL CHAIR FOR CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS AND ADAPTATION
SCRIPPS INSTITUTION OF OCEANOGRAPHY, UCSD
Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at the University of California, San Diego (http://scripps.ucsd.edu) is a world renowned center of research with approximately 200 principal investigators leading research programs on all aspects of earth, ocean, biological and atmospheric sciences. SIO collaborates extensively with principal investigators at UCSD spanning social sciences, biosciences, engineering, and public health. We are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The department is interested in candidates who have demonstrated commitment to excellence by providing leadership in teaching, research or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
We seek a Full Professor for the Presidential Chair for Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation, although an outstanding Associate Professor may be considered. The successful candidate will serve as the Director of the Center for Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation (CCIA) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego. This multi-disciplinary center, a UCSD campus-wide initiative, will study the already unfolding impacts of climate change (e.g., sea level rise induced flooding and erosion and extreme weather) and develop adaptation methodologies to mitigate commerce, agriculture, ecological, and societal disruptions. A vital center function is to interact with and educate policy makers, managers and others as society adapts to climate change.
Attributes of a successful applicant should include:- Internationally recognized researcher in the field of climate change and/or adaptation including the ocean's role and response to climate change, terrestrial impacts including water supply, heat waves, and wildfires, ecological impacts, and policy and human impacts resulting from a changing climate. Expertise of a successful candidate may include, but is not limited to, sea level rise, coastal oceanography, shoreline processes including coastal inundation, climate and oceanographic research, hazards, observational networks, meteorology, atmospheric change, adaptive environmental design, and social science disciplines related to climate change adaptation and policy.
- Demonstrated capability to work closely with physical scientists, engineers, social scientists, policy experts, decision makers, and responders at academic, industry, federal, state, local, and non-governmental organizations.
- Demonstrated capability to lead and grow a university-based center; that involves managing administrative, technical, and research staff.
- Commitment to teaching and developing educational curricula on climate change impacts and adaptation, for example, through the SIO Master of Advanced Studies - Climate Science and Policy program or the Applied Ocean Science program with the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering.
- Experience in securing and managing a portfolio of extramural funded programs from private, state, and federal sources.
- Experience in working with large organizations. The Center for Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation will join other Scripps centers that aid policymakers and resource managers in the arena of climate change adaptation by providing access to and interpreting data and forecast information. As it evolves, the center will collaborate with existing programs (e.g., the Coastal Data Information Program, the Center for Western Water and Weather Extremes).
- Ability to promote the use of center knowledge nationally and internationally.
- Strong leadership or a commitment to support diversity, equity and inclusion in an academic setting is preferred.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in an earth science discipline (e.g., oceanography, atmospheric science, climate science), engineering discipline (e.g., civil, environmental, coastal), or related field. Applicants should have research interests and distinguished accomplishments in multidisciplinary research that span biosciences, social sciences, and policy. They should have a commitment to teaching University students and supporting graduate students.
The appointment will entail full time salary support as a Director/Professor. Rank, level of appointment (Associate, Acting Associate, Full, Acting Full) and salary will depend on the experience of the successful applicant and will be based on UCSD pay scales.
